The Need for the US to Sign the Paris Agreement
General Purpose: To appeal
Specific Purpose: To appeal to all stakeholders to work with haste in ensuring the United States signs the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Thesis: It is critical for the United States to sign the Paris Agreement, which brings together all nations in the fight against climate change and its consequences.
A report released by Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) indicates that climate change is very significant threat facing the world. With the unprecedented changes in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns, the balance of life and climate has been severely disrupted, with serious consequences on food and water availability, and health. Climate change has contributed to a number of emergencies in the recent past. Severe weather patterns has brought floods, storms, rising sea levels and increased ocean-water temperature, severe droughts, deadly heat waves, and among other extreme weather patterns. There is need for a concerted action by governments worldwide to reverse the impacts of climate change. Experts warn that failure to take immediate action may lead to irreversible changes in climate patterns, resulting in more extreme and deadlier weather conditions.
Climate change phenomenon occurs because of releasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Some of the greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapor, and methane. The release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere has increased over the last century, mainly driven by human activities, and including energy use. In order to reverse the impacts of climate change, there is need for international cooperation and especially among developed nations. The United States is the second-largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world. As such, the nation should take a proactive approach in curbing climate change. The U.S. government must emphasize on maintaining environmental standards to its current concerns on trade deals. This will go a long way in ensuring the future of generations to come.
