Abstract

Most people do not know this, but writing is a systematic process. The process of writing is one that requires and uses more basic skills compared to all the other subject areas. Writing is not something that comes naturally even to professional writers. It requires training through various steps in order to develop writing skills that are efficient in all forms of writing. Young writers can be trained on writing through use of direct instruction, conferencing or modelling. Learning the writing process is very important in helping writers to produce materials that are accurate.

The writing process is made up of five phases; pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Pre-writing is defined as “the stage of recovery in the writing process when a person assimilates his subject to himself.” (Rohman, 2012, P. 106). A good writer plans what they want to write about first before putting it on paper. Planning can start with formulating a topic then create a brief outline of the information to include on the chosen topic. When it comes to drafting, here the writer writes down a rough presentation of his ideas for his own use hence does not have to be perfect.

The third phase involves revision of the draft whereby the writer looks at his writing from the audience’s view. Most writers prefer having somebody else revise their work to help identify parts that may not be clear. This way, the writer can be assured that the target audience will benefit from the written material. The next phase is editing which involves paying focus to the language part of the material. The written document should be one that meets the standards of written English. Here, the writer checks on factors such as grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and spelling among others. Finally, after all is done, the writer can complete the process by publishing the document so that it can reach the intended audience. This paper focuses on the third phase of the writing process; revising. The paper will discuss in detail what is involved in revising, why the phase is important and the various forms of revision.

Body

Revision simply means looking at a written document from a fresh and clear perspective. This explains why most writers do their drafts and put them away for a day or two before going back to look at them. Looking at something form a fresh perspective helps identify things that would not be seen before either due to laziness or fatigue that can come from long hour of writing non-stop. Students hear their instructors repeatedly urging them to revise but not many take the advice and those who do, not all do it right (Guffey, 2014)

Revising a document does not imply that you have failed, it simply means that you want to perfect your writing. For the revision phase to be effective, writers need to be honest to themselves. They need to put themselves in the audiences’ shoes and ask themselves if they would want to read or listen to their writing. Looking at the material from that perspective can guide the writer in identifying the necessary changes.

Revision is completely separate from editing although most people tend to take these two things to have one meaning. Revision is all about looking at the draft from a bigger picture not about checking punctuations or sentence structures. Taking these two tasks and performing them simultaneously, though tempting may not give the best end results. “Revision should focus on the organization, content and style used in writing” (Seow, 2012, P.315). These factors help in examining the target audience as well as the writers approach and its effectiveness.

Organization

Organization refers to the writing arrangement used whether it is in the entire document or in specific paragraphs or sentences. Here, the writer will focus on issues such as whether the document has followed the chosen form throughout. The document should also have all its ideas clearly separated into specific paragraphs for ease of understanding and following through due to the good flow of information. The points presented in the document should also be well balanced by ensuring that all are developed to the same extent.

Content

                        Content refers to the overall theme of writing. Revising the content involves identifying if the document is written in a way that will fulfill its intended purpose. It is important to start with the larger overall content of the written material then gradually move to the smaller parts until the entire material is revised. To begin with, the purpose of the document should be clearly stated and then maintained throughout the material. In addition, “all the supporting information and sources used in the document should clearly relate to the intended purpose” (Guffey, 2014, P.91). Through revising the content, the writer can be assured that the audience know and understand exactly what he or she mean to say.

Style

                        Sometimes people may be attracted to something, not because of the content but how the content is delivered. Writers deliver their thoughts through their writing styles. The style employed by a writer shows their personality and shows how the material will either suit the audience or vice-versa. The choice of words, fluency and sentence structure all contribute in creating a certain effect to the written material which makes it either interesting for the audience or boring.

Every writer that aspires to better themselves must accept that it is not always that they will get to keep all the material they come with (Rohman, 2012). They may have to trash some of their material during the revision stage if for one reason or another, it does not align with the intended purpose of the document. Accepting to make this changes is a step closer to coming up with a refined piece of writing that both the writer and the audience will enjoy.

Conclusion

Contrary to the opinions of many, revising a document does not mean that the writer is incompetent or that the material is poor. It simply means the writer wants to improve the document. It is important that writers understand this concept so that they can feel free to revise their work or even have somebody else do it for them. Revising can be easier if it is done from a printed copy which is easier on the eyes.

Reading the paper aloud can also help identify grammatical errors and other issues. In order to ensure that the paper will serve its purpose, the writer should also ask themselves as many questions as possible and ensure they answer them truthfully. A good writer is one who does not get attached to their material because it is the only way they can revise it objectively. What should matter to a good writer is not keeping most of his work but rather the reaction of the target audience.

As a result of this increase, global and national responses to the problem have grown in recent years to the extent that the issue of human trafficking has been changed from a petty issue into a global and national agenda of high value in the United States Congress, the European Union as well as the United Nations. Most of the human trafficking victims in the United States come from Thailand, India, Mexico, Philippines, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Types of human trafficking and slavery

The trafficking and smuggling of human beings go back to the beginning of civilization considering that ancient civilization was based on chattel slavery. The legal ownership of people on the similar basis of properties existed in all the ancient civilization particularly in Asia, Africa, Europe and pre-Columbian America. In the early days, slaves were important sources of economic output in these societies considering that they were mainly used in the production of goods and services especially in plantations. Despite the fact that the modern law prohibits the legal ownership of a slave, those in power politically or economically can own slaves by controlling their movements and activities through their power (Davy 320). There are different kinds and natures of human trafficking and slavery, and they include:

Sex trafficking – reports from the department of health and human services in the United States of America show that over 250,000 are at the risk of being exploited sexually every year. Runaway children are at a higher risk of being forced to sexual activities or prostitution and in the worst cases, they are trafficked into the sex industry. Due to their economic surroundings, these children are forced to have sex in exchange for money from the rich or any other individual willing to give them money.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children – minors in the United States even below the age of 14 have been found to engage in prostitution all in the name of money. Inquiry demonstrates that young men are at a high danger of being trafficked or subjugated into farming work, the drug exchange, and minor crime. Then again, little young ladies are at a higher danger of being constrained into the sex business and residential work. In the year 2008 alone, more than 3800 youngsters were distinguished as business sexual abuse victims in the United States. Statistics show that runaway youths in the US are likely to be lured into prostitution within 48 hours of their lives in the streets and this increases the number of youths and children at the risk of being trafficked or enslaved (Kangaspunta 33).

Labor trafficking – according to the human rights center in Berkeley, there are more than 10,000 forced laborers in the United States. As a matter of fact, over a third of all domestic servants in the country and some portion who are children are held up in their position against their will. Notably, this number might be slightly high considering that human trafficking and slavery are secretive and the figure named earlier constitutes of only the survivors of this servitude. These forced laborers who come to America in with the hope of finding better employment and greener pastures are forced to work agriculture sector, domestic labor as well as traveling sales crew.

Causes of human trafficking and global slavery

While human trafficking has recently attracted substantial public and political concerns, it is worth noting that this is not a new issue or challenge especially in the American society. Human trafficking varies from one region to another and from one country to another. Below are some of the major causes of human trafficking and global slavery.

Poverty – Poverty has been found to affect individual notion and concept of choice and time to time dive families and individuals to make desperate decisions. In most cases, families living in poverty are forced to send their children at a tender age to work in urban centers with a more suitable economic environment such as the United States without realizing that these children might be forced into slave labor or prostitution (Bowersox 215).

Globalization – the processes and procedures through which industries and businesses develop international influence has increased the need for cheap labor in developed countries. However, the rate of human trafficking and global slavery is increasing with an increase in the globalization rate in the United States. The fact that the migration policies and rules in the United States have not changed with changes in the rate of globalization which forces individuals to illegally migrate to the country and end up being slaves, engage in crime or prostitution.

Political environment – political instability and militarism in most countries especially Arab countries such as Syria and Iraq, have forced families to run for their safety to developed countries. Considering that these families are desperate to run for their lives, they are willing to do anything to get to America with the hope of finding a safe place to raise their families and secure employment. This desperation forces them to work in plantations, as domestic servants or even engage in prostitution as they attempt to find a way to feed their families.

Combating human trafficking

Combating human trafficking and global slavery might not be as simple as most individuals may think. To eliminate this problem in the society, governments and those in power need to focus on formulating and introducing poverty alleviation programs and awareness. Considering that destitution, lack of knowledge and lack of understanding about the risks associated with human trafficking highly contributes to this issue, the government and non-governmental organization should focus on creating awareness among the people. Additionally, there is the need to promote education in a country or a region which increased the pool of skilled labor and entrepreneurs who in turn helps in fighting poverty as they create employment opportunities (Sealy, et al. 27).

Conclusion

Human trafficking and global slavery affect not only the person being trafficked or enslaved but also the entire society and country. Resources such as employment for legal migrant employees and public facilities may be used by the illegal immigrants in the United States, thus displacing resources for legal residents which n turn lowers the living standards. Therefore, the government should put more effort to make sure that it curbs the increase of human trafficking and global slavery.

ANALYSIS OF ROMANCE OF TRISTAN 3

Beroul simultaneously celebrate and damn adultery through two characters namely
Tristan and Yseut. After Tristan is shot with a poisoned arrow, he sails to unknown lands in such
of a healer. Miraculously, he sails to Ireland where the King’s daughter, Yseut, offers him a cure.
After his return home, Tristan sails again to Ireland but this time in search of a life companion. It
is during this time that he fights and defeats a dragon that had terrorized people for quite long. In
the process, he suffers a serious wound. Yseut once again heals Tristan. As a reward for killing
the dragon, Tristan is offered Yseut in return. He decides to give Yseut to King Mark after he
returns home from Ireland.
Before leaving, the Queen gives Brangain, Yseut’s maid, a love portion which she should
give to Mark and Yseut on the day of their wedding. While sailing, Brangain accidentally gives
the love portion to Tristan and Yseut, thinking that it was good wine: “Both thought it was good
wine.” The love portion causes the Tristan and Yseut to deeply fall in love. In order to conceal
what had transpired, Yseut asks her maid to take her place during the wedding night. Brangain
agrees and the plans go as anticipated without Mark realizing any mischief. This marks the
beginning of adultery. Even though Tristan and Yseut are under the influence of a love portion,
lust and passion have overwhelmed them. Soon, Yseut becomes betrothed to Mark.
Tristan and Yseut continue to meet secretly without the knowledge of the king. They
continue with the affair they had until the King’s barons suspect foul play on Tristan’s side.
Mark plans to catch the two with the aid of his barons. However, his plans are thwarted when
Tristan and Yseut realize that Mark is secretly watching them. They immediately begin
lamenting how Mark thinks they are lovers, eventually convincing the King that they are not.
This is another celebration of adultery by Beroul. Mark is aware of the rendezvous between
Tristan and Yseut, yet they somehow manage to outwit him. Yseut forestalls Mark, giving the

king the opinion that what he had been led to believe was a lie. She says: “The king thinks I have
been wicked enough to love you”. Beroul uses commentary as a way of guiding the readers’
sympathies and to make it more comprehensible.
Not thoroughly convinced, some barons hatch another plot to catch Tristan. When he
moves to Yseut’s bed in the cover of darkness, his wound opens and he begin to bleed profusely
on the bed and on the floor. Mark is now convinced of the adulterous ways of Yseut. He
condemns both to death but they narrowly manage to escape. Beroul employs the narrator point
of view as a foreshadowing of the events to come. For instance she writes: “…..there were three
barons – you never saw wicked men!” This foreshadows a turning of events. At this juncture,
Beroul damns adultery and shows the readers that such actions will ultimately lead to dire
consequences. Adultery was a sin, and had to be punished. Beroul is omnipotent in the story,
telling the readers what to expect before it happens.

Part 1: The Trees of the Niu Mountain By Mengzi

Question a

The author talks of how human activities destroyed a once beautiful and green mountain view through their activities. Cattle and goats cleared whatever; the humans had left after behind cutting down the trees and vegetables with axes. The author uses the metaphor “but is this the nature of the mountain?” the author uses this metaphor as a rhetoric question to show the nature of man.  As portrayed in his work, human beings through their activities destroyed the beautiful scenery, a mountain view that was full of trees and vegetation now seems like it was never wooded. Despite cutting down the trees, he never bothered to replace them through planting more, and this destroyed the mountain forest completely.

Question b

The author thinks that human nature is bad and can only be described as uncooperative and irrationally destructive. The authors go to say that human mind feels the desire to do good and things in the right manner, but the degree of these desires are overcome by the activities of his daily operations.  As he is exposed to these destructive activities every single day, he loses the proper goodness of the mind, and this prompts him to engage in such activities as destroying the forest without replacing it. As a result, I fully agree with the author that human nature is basically bad.

Question c

According to the author, there are various forces that corrupt a good soul and turn it into a dark soul. They include the tussle and hustle of every day, the interaction than man has with the nature and other living organisms at day time and the influence he gains from other people that he interacts with.

Question d

Benevolence and righteousness are key concepts and pillars of building a healthy community. These values are shared by people of diverse cultures in the society considering that they need each other for their survival and no one can live alone. Thus, with benevolence and righteousness, there is trust and love among the people leading to a happy life as well as improving their living standards.

Part 2: Harvard University Commencement Speech by Alan Greenspan

Question 1

I think Greenspan is realistic about the possibility of business ethics. Ethical principles offer individuals platform and foundation on which to base their decisions concerning the daily operations of business. In a real sense, business ethics offers a business person a moral background in which he or she determines what is right and wrong for both the business and his clients. According to Greenspan, the only way to describe a successful person is through evaluation of the methods and techniques he used to gain his wealth and success.  He goes on to say that “but material success is possible in this world and far more satisfying when it comes without exploiting others.” with business ethics, there is trust, honesty, and fairness between the employer and the employee and between a business person and his clients. As a matter, an individual finds greater satisfaction in earning his wealth in an honest manner as well as helping others to climb the ladder of life.

Question 2

Just like any professional, daily operations of a business should be guided by ethical principles.  Some of the core ethical values that I plan to follow in my career include:

  1. Honesty – Honesty in the workplace increases the trust in a workplace, builds a reputation, promotes loyalty and ensures quick dispute resolution.
  2. Fairness – Fairness in the workplace is critical to ensuring that workers are fully dedicated and motivated to work. Pay systems and proper rewards for commendable jobs are some of the ways that I can employ in a workplace.
  • Justice – workplace justice comprises of employment rights and effective voice through consultation arrangements as well as negotiation to solve conflicts and misunderstanding among the workers.
  1. Truthfulness – telling the truth in the workplace through disclosure of the real situation of the company through its financial statements creates a mutual trust among the employees and all business stakeholders in general.

 

Part 3: Mental Discipline

Question 3

The human mind is known to be influenced by the things and people around him. Regardless of how mentally strong a person might be, they break at some point, and they give in to the pressure around them although it might be against their will. According to the reading: An interview conducted with Roberto Assagioli by Sam Keen, there are certain strategies that an individual can employ to improve their mental and moral discipline. These strategies include disidentification, training of the will and identification with the predicate rather than the subject.

  1. Disidentification – according to the author, “humans are dominated by everything with which he identifies himself with. On the other hand, the same human being can control and dominate everything else that he misidentifies with it”. Thus, to me be mentally disciplined, we have to disidentify ourselves with all the things we don’t want to dominate us.
  2. Training of will – will is a matter of direct experience and the desire for an individual to pursue or strive to gain something. Through training, an individual can manage to hold their desires to only those things and events that are beneficial and thus, do away with unwanted things. This helps improve their mental discipline.
  • Identifying with the predicate rather than the subject – according to Assagioli, the crisis in life deprives an individual the role with which he or she has identified forcing the disidentification process in that individual’s life. If this disidentification process occurs with conscious cooperation, an individual stands a good chance to increase their mental discipline.

Part 4: Mediation of Roman Empire

Question 1

I know there is no ending or full stop when it comes to learning both inside the class and outside the class.  Despite studying in the class, the society and community in large had a significant effect on my learning life. With that, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated in my learning in one way or another.  My gratitude to my grandfather Mr. Green for your moral lessons and creating a man out of a boy and to my father who showed me how to live a modest life as well as helping me develop manly character since I was a child. How can I forget my mother from whom I learned great values such as piety and beneficence as well as abstinence not only from evil activities but also from evil thoughts? I say thanks to my great-grandfather who taught me how to relate well with the society, my governor who taught me never to give up but persevere and endure regardless of the situations and circumstances. Thanks to Diognetus from whom I received the impression that character improves discipline, to my brother Sam who showed me the importance of love and honesty in the society and to classmate John who showed me the importance of hard work.

Part 5: Ability to Recover And Learn From Failure

Question 1

According to the author, the dark soil of Lincoln’s melancholy began to yield fruits in his mid-forties when he began the fight against slavery. Lincoln higher purpose was to fight for the weak and those who had no say in the society such as the black community which was treated like slaves depriving them of their freedom. The suffering he had gone through in his earlier life made him the right person for the job as they were able to give him clarity, conviction, creative skills in the face of adversity. Lincoln had a keen vision which usually brought him pain and being in a position to face troubling reality in the eyes gave him the much-needed strength to fulfill his purpose. His creativity was a key pillar in his ability to overcome all difficult situations. Lincoln’s literary prowess was evident in most of his speeches and is a well-appreciated aspect of his life and works.  His creativity is attributed to his mental illness and in more than one occasion Lincolns was reported to suffer from a mood disorder. It is during this time that he was able to come off with creative ideas on handle situations in his life and the fight for freedom of the slaves. Lincoln sadness and strength coexisted well in him making him unique and very strong emotionally.  “Despite more misery and sufferings in his life and tests from different people, he responded with determination and humility.” After stepping back from suicide in his early childhood, he was determined to make a change is his life and the only viable change he thought was the fight against slavery.

Question 2

I would recommend to all my friends to adopt and employ characters as those of Lincoln. Perseverance and endurance were some of the strong characters of Lincoln. Irrespective of how hard he tried to succeed, he never succeeded and the more he lived, the more sufferings he had to go through. However, one of the best characters displayed by Lincoln all his life is the fear of fear that made him creative and devises new ways to make sure that he did not fail. They should have set goals and purpose that should give meaning to their lives. They should learn to rise above all odds like Lincoln in his fight against slavery. More importantly, they should learn how to engage in activities that are beneficial in their lives and that are meant to improve the lives of those around them. As Lincoln said, to be successful, a person needs to move from the state where he or she asks the question what they shall do to a stage where they can ask how they should accomplish their goals. A humble start should be the stepping stone and a source of determination. Just in the case of Lincoln “the determination came from the sense that however humble his station, Lincoln was no idle passenger but a sailor on the deck with a job to do.”  Finally, they should not take failures as disappointments, but rather they should take them as lessons and draw motivation out of them and the zeal and willingness to try again until they succeed.

Part 6: Shattered Glass

Question a

The real driving force behind his actions and activities was to succeed and become the most successful publisher of his time. This was the main reason as to why he started publishing falsified but exciting articles to have a large fan base and become the best among the best. However, I do not think that he truly knew himself because he could be carried away easily by the desires and thoughts of becoming famous.

Question b

It is likely that glass saw himself as smarter than his colleagues and publishers and thought that he could commit such a crime and get away with it. The fact that he was popular and famous among his fellow publishers and editors mad him loose focus and thought that his popularity shielded him from any punishment or action contrary to his wishes from the management.

Question c

To publish falsified articles, the glass used some few tricks for his readers so that they would not know whether his story was real or a mere lie. First, glass was not naming his sources. Despite publishing exciting stories, he would not mention where he got his stories, and surprisingly, even his readers did not care to know. Second, the glass had a brother by the name Palo Alto whom glass used to say was the head of Jukt Micronics, and his every call went directly to voicemail.

Lane had to order all his publishers and editors to apologize to their readers for the unfortunate incident in their company. Most are the times in life when individual lose the thrill and vigor they had after a series of disappointing results. To be able to ensure that the momentum is not lost and a player still competes at the highest level possible, he needs to re – set greater challenges.  Doing the same thing over and over again is known to bring boredom and hence and individual lacks motivation and inspiration. The best way to keep the fire burning is to keep on raising the bar and getting new challenges. Another technique that can help an individual in such situation is taking time off to re -energize as well as avoiding burnout by taking a holiday or a vacation. Recognize and reward is another strategy a person can employ. Getting the appropriate reward for the hard work can be used as a way of self – motivation. Appropriate rewards remind a person the real reason as to why he is working hard and thus encouraging them to maintain momentum.

Part 8: Lowa Supreme Court

Question a

Judges in courts are there to administer justice and ensure that rules and regulations are followed to the letter.  It is a moral misconduct and crime for a person especially of a profession like an attorney submitting a plagiarized work in a court of law. The law requires such as person to first get a go ahead from the authors of the job, and failure to that can lead to penalties.  As a judge, he should ensure that there is no favoritism and the rule of law is upheld.

Question b

I think the punishments to attorney Peter Cannon are about right. Plagiarism is a major crime and should be treated just like any other criminal activity. However, due to the fact that Cannon admitted his mistakes and promised to contact and notify the authors of the plagiarized article and provide the court with correspondence, his punishment should not be severe. As a result, I fell like the punishment administered to him to be fair and about right.

Question c

Although the case involving lane was almost similar to that of cannon, there is a slight difference in that the attorney in the case between Iowa Supreme Court Board of Professional Ethics and Conduct versus lane failed to respond to the court for several months. As a person who has some knowledge on how the laws of a country work, he should have known better that it is an offense to fail to respond to the court. Moreover, instead of immediately acknowledging his crime, he tried to conceal his criminal activities through the presentation of a four-page, single-spaced list of sources. As a result, he committed a crime on top of the other, and I fully agree and support the court’s reasoning.

I do not think that this public shaming is too harsh. Being public figures and role models to young and growing children, attorneys and other high profile individuals in the society should act in an appropriate manner. This public shaming only acts as a lesson to other people of a similar behavior as well as those inspiring to be of great service to the society to behave appropriately and respect the laws of a country.

Question a

Richard received the Nobel peace prize in physics back in 1965 and in his speech he observes two common elements among the people who voted for him and these are joy and affection. He goes on to say that fathers turned excitedly with newspapers on their hands to their wives and daughter running to their neighbors to inform them of his victory. This scenario shows great joy and affection. On the other hand, Albert Camus upon receiving his Nobel peace prize in literature stated that through his art, he offers a string of people pictures of common joys and suffering. He goes on to say that it is the duty of an artist to integrate with the people as well as tell the truth.

Both recipients of the Nobel peace prize share the value of humility. Through their speeches, it easy to tell that they are both humbled to win the prize and show gratitude to those who voted for them. In his speech, Richard states that “for this, I thank Alfred Nobel and the many who worked so hard to carry out his wishes in this particular way.” On the other hand, Albert stated that “my gratitude has been profound, particularly when I consider the extent to which this recompense has surpassed my personal merits.”

Adler and Van Doren assert that students “must do the learning” in the process of education. The idea propounded by the duo is true in the process of gaining knowledge. Teachers’ critical role is to facilitate the learning process by guiding students. The teacher delivers the content while carefully guiding the learner. However, it is the sole responsibility of the student to do the learning, or as the duo asserts, “knowledge must grow” in the mind of the student. The teacher may deliver the content well in class. Nonetheless, if students fail to do the learning, set goals of education will not be realized. The students may be taught different things. However, students must show the initiative to learn or gain knowledge. Once students are taught in class be teachers, it is their initiative to understand or apply the concepts taught in real life situations. Students should take time to reflect on what they have been taught by the teacher, and think of how the new concepts can apply in real life situations. Thus as the duo asserts, students take the initiative to learn by themselves.

As a student, I have a critical role to play in the learning process with respect to the instructor. Students are responsible for their own success or in this case failure in the learning process. Teachers facilitate the process of learning either through writing or giving speech to the learners. The teacher should keep the learners interested in discovering through learning. The teacher should therefore ensure that his/her lessons capture the interests of the learners. The teacher guides the entire learning process. This means that the teacher is in charge of organizing content to deliver in class, leading discussions and guiding the entire process of learning.

The role of a teacher may vary in different cultures. The teacher should be able to understand other languages since different cultures have different languages. The teacher should also be open to a wide variety of worldviews. It is important for the teacher to understand the worldviews of other cultures since they may be significantly different from his/her own. In some cultures, students are allowed to make their own classroom decisions while in others the teacher is responsible.
