THE CONCEPT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

Question

Does the concept of homeland security present problems with our constitutional protections of civil rights? If so, how? Should our society live in fear of terrorists?

Sample paper

The Concept of Homeland Security

Advancement in technology has made life easier in most quarters. However, the same technology has increased channels and techniques through which terrorists can use to fulfill their evil desires.  As a result, America has formed a police arm known as the homeland security with a sole aim of ensuring that America is safe, secure and resilient against terrorism and other hazards that can interfere with their interests, aspirations and the way of life (May, 2011). Moreover, this arm of the security is built on strategies designed to achieve their vision which is security, resilience and customs and exchange. This assignment will examine the flaws of the homeland security concept.

Given the power that the head of the department of homeland security is given by the constitution, it is correct to say that this department of security in a large way interferes with the civil rights of individuals. The new concept states that the director of the homeland security has the power and the mandate to prosecute an individual whom he suspects to be involved in terrorist attacks even without a trial. Moreover, the new concepts state that homeland security has the power to break down longstanding stovepipes of activity that have been and could still be exploited by those seeking to harm America. This is a clear infringement of the American constitution given the fact that individuals have a right to defend themselves against accusations in the court of law (Bellavita, 2008).  Nevertheless, the law permits all individuals to move to any part of the country and to engage in any activity as long as it is legal. The Bible in the book of John 8:36 “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Moreover, 1corinthians 6:12 the Bible says that “I have the right to do anything,” you-say but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”-but I will not be mastered by anything. Thus despite the need to fight terrorism, homeland security should not compromise people’s rights.

The Third Jihad

The Third Jihad

Question

Investigative journalist, Steve Emerson originally documented the existence of jihad in America. Then, Brian Jenkins found 46 publically recorded attacks or attempted attacks from radicalized individuals between 9/11/2001 and December 2009. More recently, Ryan Mauro and the Clarion Project exposed radical Islamic groups inside America. Do you agree or disagree with these findings? If there is a radical Islamic presence inside America, what should be done about radical ideology and by whom? Prior to preparing your answer you may want to watch “The Third Jihad” available online at: www.thethirdjihad.com and on You Tube at the Clarion Project channel.

The Third Jihad

Whenever terrorists attack and hit any part of the world, all leaders and people come together to condemn such evil deeds. However, it is worth noting that despite terrorism being widely associated with the Muslim community, not all Muslims are bad and terrorist, but a small section of the whole population who are radicalized taints the whole picture. This radical group has gone further to draft what seems like a manifesto that outlines their ambitions and intentions of turning America into an Islamic country. I fully agree and support recent reports in the media concerning the threats posed by these radical groups in America (Dedon, 2016). This assignment will attempt to provide more understanding On the Third Jihad.

From the evidence provided by the video, it clear that there is a radical Islamic presence in America and it is the high time that the government and non-radical Muslims leaders work hand in hand to curb if not eliminate this group.  Diplomacy is the right channel to be used in this kind of crisis where the government can sit down with leaders of such groups to find common ground to solve their issues. Mass training and conferencing to enlighten all Americans of the importance of national integrity as well as peace by citing examples of past terrorist attacks like September 11, would help in changing their stand and belief regarding radicalization (Boucek, 2007).  On the other hand, if diplomacy fails, the government can result in using force to dismantle all radicalized organizations whether by Muslim or other religions. Despite that this method will infringe people’s rights and freedom, it is necessary to prevent escalation of the problem and help to contain any future attacks.

Hezbolla is Not a Terrorist Group

Hezbolla is Not a Terrorist Group

Question

Do you believe that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization or merely acting in self-defense? Why?

Sample paper

Hezbolla is Not a Terrorist Group

Hezbolla is a political party and a militant group formed by the Shia islamist in Lebanon. It was formed in order to rebel against Israel group who had invaded and colonized the southern strip of Lebanon since 1982. Israel military has been executing frequent attacks to Lebanon which prompted the group formation. The first attack in1982 left more than 20,000 Lebaneese dead and the last invasion which took place in 2006 claimed 1400 lives. Regardless of the invasion and massive loss of lives, Gulf Cooperation Council termed Hezbolla as a terrorist group. I strongly disagree to the notion that it is a terrorist military group but rather it is defense group.

Related: Causes of Terrorist Attacks

Arabs in Lebanon have been suffering for long from Israel attack therefore they have a right to form a military group that will defend the lives of its citizen and also deter further aggression from the Israeli army. Hezbolla waged guerrilla war against the Israeli as they invaded Lebanon hence forcing them to retreat from Southern boarder. In addition, they have never retaliated since 1982 from fighting against the Israel army. Instead of Gulf Cooperation Council condemning it as a terrorist group,  it should have applauded the efforts they make and  urge Israel military to back out of Lebanon and withdraw any planned future attack.

United Nations Interim forces in Lebanon reported and documented that Israel has been violating the Lebaneese on daily basis. However, these fact has not been covered by Israel media who are keen in naming Hezbolla a terrorist group. Lebaneese people need to have a defense mechanism against the Israeli which can only be offered by Hezbolla militia. Furthermore, the Lebaneese army is not strong and it has been infiltrated by pro Israeli officers. Therefore, only Hezbolla has the capacity, and it is protecting Lebanon against the next invasion thus it is a defense group.

Causes of Terrorist Attacks

Causes of Terrorist Attacks

In recent years, no one seems to be safe in the world. Terrorism is an ugly development which has compelled world leaders as well as many public figures to spend millions of dollars in the attempt to beef up their securities to keep their countrymen and families safe from terrorist attacks. It is correct to say that today’s world in an increasingly complex world and which has led to an increase in challenges faced by citizens of various countries. Often, terrorism involves the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. As a result, common citizens develop a state of fear and submission produced by these evil and inhuman acts. With the increase and advancement of technology, terrorists are finding new ways and techniques to carry out their acts making it difficult for the security forces to detect or predict these attacks.

Summary

For many years, the Muslim community has been largely associated with terrorist attacks in various parts of the globe. However, it is the high time that world leaders change their beliefs and notion regarding terrorism. A broad array of different countries and regions not necessarily of the Muslim countries have practiced terrorists to further their political objectives. For any nation to be in a position to stop these attacks, it has to have a full understanding of the root causes of terrorist attacks. However, this fight cannot be left in the hand of a few countries with financial, political and military power and we all need to participate (Wilson 2013). As a fact, terrorism has become a hazardous threat to all countries around the globe. Some of the basic causes of terrorists include political and social injustices as well as belief that violence will be effective to usher in any change particularly political changes. Moreover, the formation of the nationalist or separatist organization in various countries can lead to these attacks that leave devastating casualties and loss of lives. This assignment will attempt to explore various aspects of terrorism, particularly its causes and possible solutions.

Root causes of terrorist attacks around the globe

The most important lesson in human life is not to stay still, but rather people should seek new challenges with vigor in the attempt to design and create solutions to these issues. As a result, world leaders should focus on finding a solution to reduce terrorist attack if not to eliminate them completely. Nevertheless, there is no one single religion that encourages terrorist act or violence, and thus, most of the prolific world leaders are wrong to associate terrorist attacks with the Muslim region. Some of the possible causes of terrorism include:

Political injustices and grievances

Often individuals may choose terrorism when trying to the right a political or a social event that they perceive to be wrong. The chances are that when people lack political inclusion in state or when solving political grievances may trigger them to form a terrorist organization in the attempt to push for political inclusion as well as righting political wrong. Statistics show that in recent years, there has been an increase in reported cases of frustrated expression of political will which turns violent in the future leading to attacks on innocent people (Aksoy 2014). Despite the fact that this is the only way such individuals may explain their frustrations to their leaders it is against the bible that states “ there are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.” This verse is a clear indication that there is no religion that is allowed to practice terrorism and in the case of political grievances and injustices leaders should sit down and find a solution amicably rather than fighting and killing an innocent individual. In most cases, Islam is a reaction to oppressive governments and its western supporters who try to manipulate all that they do ranging from their political life to economic life to social life. So often, Muslim grows angry for the lack of representation like other communities in world matters, especially western affairs leading disillusioned persons into the arms of terrorism.

Oppression

Terrorist will be greatly increased if they can influence people around the world to achieve objectives and goals of their groups. While terrorism is on the increase in recent years, there is an increase in a number of people who suffer because of their ungodly acts. Another major cause of terrorism around various regions in the world is oppression that is usually inflicted on the indigenous communities by the colonialist. Most people believe dead and gone the days that countries could colonize others, but this is not true (LaFree 2014). In the current era, the developed countries may exercise neo-colonialism particularly economically by inflicting bans and conditions for a particular country, making it difficult for such countries to participate in world affairs. Such countries who feel that they are colonized may form nationalist movements to fight against oppression and discrimination, thus increasing chances of becoming terrorist organizations. In most cases, extreme nationalism can set up or uphold language rights, religious belief, and symbols of a particular company community. Research and past studies show that most of the resistance groups against oppressors have turned into terrorist organizations in the attempt to free their countries, families as well as communities from the oppressors.

Religion

Most of the world leaders specifically Christians hold a belief that terrorism is caused by religion. To most people, religion is paramount cause of terrorism as it is mainly stressed on the Muslim extremists in the Middle East. However, it is prudent for people to understand that not all Muslims are bad and can be associated with terrorism. Only a portion of Muslim width extreme ideas and concepts has led to the belief that all Muslims are terrorists, which lead to discrimination and segregation as most of the Muslim leaders are not allowed to participate in world matters. Past research has indicated that Islamic terrorism completely rejects the ideology of democracy and individualism while another group of Muslim prefers and believes in caliphate rather than capitalism (Newman 2013). Although it is not the primary cause of terrorism, religion plays a vital role in turning innocent minds and roll into extremist who kills and terrorizes other in the name of Allah. Today religion is regarded as one of the fundamental drivers of terrorism as it encourages attacks through promising rewards in the afterlife thus prompting more and more terrorist to carry out suicide bomb that is more violent in nature than other types of terrorism.

Terrorism is perhaps one of the most challenging problems of our time and for those who have witnessed it impacts first hand has an experience of how devastating these acts and activities can be.  The truth is that it may be hard or even impossible to reduce terrorist activities in some of the countries leave alone eliminating them. It is difficult to stop an individual who believes that he or she is fighting for his or hard freedom and that there are possible afterlife rewards in heaven. However, with collective efforts and willingness, I believe that world leaders can manage to reduce these activities n larger scales. Some of the most viable solutions to these attacks include:

Keeping a check on extremist clerics

As stated earlier on, religion is one of the factors that have contributed positively to terrorism by encouraging terrorist attacks by extremist clerics. To be in a position to control; attacks, there is the need for world leaders to keep a close check on all extremist clerics to ensure that they do not poison good souls and minds with evil thoughts. Surprisingly, most of these clerics have found refuge in the western countries where they carry out their activities without being suspected or detected, making it difficult for criminologists and other security forces to get to them (Bruyelle 2014). Such scenarios show there are corrupt leaders and officers from the western countries who allow such clerics to get into their countries.

Stop the flow of terrorist funds

Research shows that most of these terrorists come from poor or middle-level countries that cannot afford to plan and equip extremist Muslim and other terrorist to carry attacks around the world. Thus, a terrorist is funded by some of the world countries that have the financial power to purchase as well as pay these poor Muslim citizens to carry out the attacks. The only way to cripple this circle is by finding and stopping the flow of money into such organization. Without financial backup, most of these organizations will not have the funds to run as well as finance most of their activities thus reducing their attacks if not eliminating their activities. There should be no funding of institutions or charities given without proper verification from concerned parties.

Education

There is another group of leaders who feel that educating children and the youth from developing countries and communities can become one of the primary solutions to terrorism. Considering that most of these terrorists go to all this trouble not because they believe in the religion or to fight for their course, it is because they need money to feed their families (LaFree 2014).  Thus, educating the younger generation can be a major and significant step in the fight against terrorists.

In conclusion, it is correct to say that terrorism is not the answer to problems affecting our people irrespective of our ethnic or racial. Thus, finding a peaceful solution to all our problems is far much more important rather than to revenge through the shedding of innocent blood. However, to win this fight, it is important to be conversant with all terrorist activities as well have background knowledge as to why they carry out their attacks. Considering that their effects are felt across the globe not only in one country, it is the high time that we all worked together irrespective of our financial abilities or military power. Terrorism is a global threat and should not be condoned.

War on Terror-Role of Media

Question

What do you believe the role of the media is in the “War on Terror?” Why? Do you believe that terrorism and the media have a symbiotic relationship (they benefit from each other)? Why or why not?

Sample paper

War on Terror-Role of Media

The media has a significant role to play in the “War on Terror.” The role of the media is to inform the public of the current events that impact their lives in one way or another. The media should provide information to the public in a fair, objective, and accurate manner (Tunman, 2003). The media provides basic information about the events that shape or touch the lives of individuals. By reporting on terrorism, the media keeps the public aware of the events that shape their lives in one way or another. The media is supposed to eliminate any uncertainties that exist among the public regarding current dangers that they may face. Thus when terrorists attack the media plays a critical role by providing objecting information to the public. This ensures that the public is aware of what is happening.

Terrorism and the media do have a symbiotic relationship. Terrorists depend on the media for publicity. Terrorists depend on the media to spread their hate messages and the various actions they perpetrate against individuals (Tunman, 2003). Terrorists engage in actions that are dramatic and meant to attempt the attention of the media. To the terrorist, the most important thing is to gain publicity. Terrorists also seek to instill fear upon the masses through the mass media. The actions by terrorists are meant for the people watching rather than the victims who experience the direct brutality. On the other hand, the media benefits by obtaining a good story, which it can “sell” to the public (Tunman, 2003). The media gives more airtime to various events relating to terrorism. The media is in constant need of news features to feed the masses, and terrorism is one of the greatest sources.

Terrorism Suppression and Freedom

Question

Topic:Terrorism Suppression and Freedom

Do you believe attempts to prevent terrorism have resulted in a significant diminution of freedoms for Americans? If so, can it be justified?
Proposed: Although there are many types of terrorism, the primary concern for the United States in recent years has been radical Islam, which isn’t necessarily another country to fight. From a biblical perspective, can the laws mentioned earlier in this prompt be justified as necessary to fighting this threat?

Terrorism Suppression and Freedom

Although technology has come to help and improve our living standards, it also has negative effects on our lives considering that terrorists are using technology to conduct attacks from various parts of the world. However, most of the Islamic communities are usually associated with terrorist activities, but this does not mean that all of them are violent. Terrorism involves the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims (Gal-Or, 2015). However, terrorism has limited people’s freedom to travel to particular destinations as well as freedom of speech. This essay will attempt to elaborate on the rules regarding terrorism suppression and freedom.

I strongly believe that attempts to prevent terrorism have led to infringement of people’s freedom and liberty. Terrorism suppression bill contains many flaws as it was rushed to be signed to bill without passing through the necessary steps. The director of the SIS was given much power to the extent that he can designate a person to be a terrorist without a trial. Moreover, the bill gives the Federal Bureau of Investigation the power to search everything to determine if an individual is a terrorist even his private things thus violating his privacy.

In Proverbs chapter six and verses sixteen, the Bible says that the Lord hates people who shed innocent blood and thus, terrorism is not supported at all. However, the laws set in place to control terrorism activities violate the freedom of the Americans which is against the bible. According to the Bible, we are all equal irrespective of races or ethnicity and thus, Islam and Christians are equal.  Moreover, in 1 Corinthians 6:12 the Bible says that “I have the right to do anything, but not everything is beneficial.” This verse clearly shows that American citizens should be given a chance to exercise their rights (Mackie, 2013). In conclusion, we can say that the rules mentioned earlier are not justified to fight terrorism.
